FIE believes in opening study abroad opportunities for all students through scholarships.  We are committed to our values and to reaching students from all communities.

In memory of our late Chairman and FIE founder Sharif Rahman, the Sharif Rahman Memorial Scholarship program was established in 2003 for FIE students. Sharif was an international educator of the highest integrity whose vision and energy shaped the development of FIE and enriched the field of education abroad.

Application Process & Selection

Applying for an FIE scholarship is designed to be straightforward while giving you the opportunity to tell us about your goals, experiences and aspirations.

Step 1 – Complete your application

To apply, you will complete the scholarship application within MyStudyAbroad. You will also need to arrange for a recommendation from a professor, academic adviser or another appropriate referee, in line with the scholarship requirements. The application deadline for all FIE scholarships is 11:59 pm CST. Please be aware this may be different from your local time.

Step 2 – Application review

Applications are reviewed during the week immediately following the application deadline by FIE's Global Scholarship Committee. Each application is assessed using a structured scoring framework that considers:

  • the potential impact of study abroad on the applicant
  • the impact a scholarship would have on their study abroad experience
  • their engagement with and reflection on their chosen scholarship theme
  • their potential to translate their experiences into meaningful personal growth or future action

Our reviewers focus on the quality of your ideas, experiences and reflection, rather than polished writing or professional presentation. We also recognise that valuable experience can come from many different aspects of life, including employment, volunteering, caring responsibilities, community involvement and student activities.

Step 3 – Scholarship decisions

Applicants will normally be notified of the outcome of their application during the week following the application deadline, once the review process has been completed.

Successful applicants will receive details of their scholarship award and any associated scholarship activities or requirements. If you have not heard from the committee within one week of the application deadline, your application has not been successful.

After you receive your scholarship

Many FIE scholarships include opportunities to become more involved in the FIE community throughout your program. Depending on the scholarship, recipients may be paired with an FIE mentor, invited to scholarship events and networking opportunities, participate in student roundtables, and, for eligible London Spring students, attend the Student Global Leadership Conference.
