Want to make a difference while developing your professional and cultural skills? Then a service internship in London is for you! FIE Service interns choose from a range of 16 placement areas and are placed with organizations that work toward “achieving public good”. Service interns register for FIE’s International Service Internship Course (ISIC), including the placements and the service internship seminars As a service intern, you will build your professional résumé working in a different culture and in a major global city while also focusing on civic engagement and the needs of the community.
The United Kingdom has a long cultural tradition of service and commitment to helping others, exemplified in government institutions like the National Health Service. Today there are over 160,000 charities in the UK supporting local, national or international causes. Service Internships in London contribute to meaningful change in the city, country, and world.
While London may seem posh and flashy to the casual tourist, hidden beneath the surface is the troubling truth that London is also England’s “poverty capital” with over a quarter of residents living in poverty, in large part due to the high cost of housing. Nearly 40% of children living in the capital are below the poverty line.
Service Interns have the best of both worlds: developing professional and cultural skills while also doing meaningful work and meeting passionate professionals. All students – even business-minded students – can benefit from the Service Internship experience.
Please note, the Service Internship Pathway is not available in the Summer Term.
From the beginning to the end of your internship experience, you will be advised and supported by your personal Internship Advisor and the entire Experiential Education Team. The Team will work with you and your home institution’s Study Abroad Office to ensure that your experience is a rewarding and fulfilling one. Students are awarded a nationally-recognized UK certificate from Vinspired based on hours of service (v50 = 50 hours, v100 = 100 hours) and reflection components. Vinspired is the UK’s leading youth volunteering charity recognizing and connecting students up to 25 years-old to opportunities in the local community. Students are able to proudly display this accomplishment on their résumé to further illustrate their skills and the Service Internship experience to future employers.
