program overview
Experience migration studies across two continents with this Summer Study Abroad program in Spain & Morocco. This two-country program explores the complex dynamics of migration. There is a focus on Spain and Morocco, two countries deeply connected by history and geography, but the program looks at this contemporary global issue with a wider lens, as well. Through academic coursework, NGO site visits, and cultural excursions in Seville and Rabat, students will examine the economic, political, and humanitarian dimensions of migration, border control, and transnational identity across Europe and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
- Two-country experience: Study and travel in Seville, Spain and Rabat, Morocco
- Interdisciplinary approach: Draw on political science, sociology, anthropology, and history
- Experiential learning: Visit NGOs, cultural institutions, and historical sites directly tied to migration

academics
Students enrolled in the program will undertake two courses:
- Labour and Migration in the Middle East — a multidisciplinary course combining political economy, anthropology, and history to examine the movement of people for work and survival in the MENA region and beyond.
- Immigration in Spain: Sociological, Political and International Dimensions — a course exploring immigration in Spain within the broader European and Mediterranean context, combining theoretical, historical, and practical perspectives, setting the foundation for further study of migration dynamics in Morocco.
- Co-curricular activities and excursions in both countries, such as day trips to Córdoba (Mezquita-Catedral) and Cádiz (city tour and beach visit)
At the end of the core program, students may choose to extend their stay in Rabat for intensive Arabic language classes. This optional component builds on the program’s deep engagement with migration, identity, and cultural exchange in the MENA region by providing immersive language instruction alongside local cultural activities. Whether you are a beginner or aiming to refine your skills, you’ll gain practical communication tools and cultural insight that enhance your understanding of the region’s history, politics, and daily life — making your summer abroad even more impactful.
Credit and transcript information
Your two courses are each worth 3 US credit hours. Should you choose to undertake the optional Arabic language course, this course is worth 6 US credit hours. Your transcript will be issued by FIE’s School of Record, Drexel University, listing all courses undertaken.
